What Do You Think?

6/27/2011
The first Winx special just aired, what do you all think of the first special? There where many changes, what ones did you or didn't you like? Plus the end of the season 1 specials ends August 1st at 8/7c with "The Revenge of The Trix!"

My take on it, it wasn't quite was I was hoping for. It seemed a little rushed at parts and jumpy. I wished they had explained somethings better, like what the Trix was after. But overall, it was good, just different side to the Winx we know. Another thing is the fact the "magic winx" is now "magic charmix", slightly let down.

But, I am very glad that they are sicking mostly with the Rai script. I also must say, I like this new voice cast, I love Molly as Bloom and Romi as Musa!

I'm just gonna copy and paste my comment from BelieveInWinx... :P I'm too lazy:

I don't understand why people were disappointed. I thought it was great! Much better than the other English dubs. Better cast, superb animation, and they did a pretty good job of sticking to the original script. A few things were a little wrong, like them calling the transformation Charmix, and the fact that the cleaning of the castle wasn't a punishment like it was in the original, but it was still very good. I loved it, I can't wait until August 1st!

And I think they'll explain the Trix's search for the Dragon Flame in the next episode. Which I think is better, since bringing it in now would be moving a bit too fast.

Anonymous said...

I literally almost started crying when they called the transformation "Charmix". I'm not even joking.
I didn't exactly like Musa or Stella's voices. They were too high-pitched or cookie-cutter-ish for my taste.
Quinn and Reynoso are absolutely PERFECT for their characters! I also like Decker as Tecna and Shively as Skye, though they could have maybe chosen actors whose voices matched the characters a bit better.
Riven's voice sounds quite similar to his 4Kids voice, which is the version I grew up watching. So, that was a nice suprise. :)
Kiko sounded a little...strange, I think the word would be. Oh, look, I'm talking about the voice of a bunny...
The animation style looked quite nice overall, though I think I spotted a few bloopers. :)
All in all, I didn't exactly enjoy it. I'm still looking forward to the next special, though, even if I'll be out of town when it premieres. :)

I know, it was a little disappointing, it just feels different, and not in a great way. Like there was something missing. But no matter what I will always stand by the Winx!

Anonymous said...

Yeah, Kiko's voice was all just screeching. It hurt my ears. :( But still, I'm not complaining! People, be grateful that we still HAVE Winx in the U.S., cuz it's either this or nothing!

Ella Anders said...

I know Anonymous, I just don't know how or why, it just doesn't feel completely right to me.

Felt fine to me. I didn't feel anything missing. You're entitled to your opinion, but I honestly don't understand.

I seriously hate to say it, but Winx was utterly butchered. It was not amusing, interesting or at all charming. Sure, some of the voices were good - like Bloom, Riven, Flora and a few others - but it was the fact that they smooshed so much into one hour - and didn't take ANY original lines. I mean, "Oh Winx? Where did we come up with that?" "I dunno, it's just us." :P Really?

The animation seemed good in the previews, since it was so short - but seeing the entire episode made me really miss the old stuff. Their eyes were so off focus, the running looked so fake and nothing seemed... well, Winx-ey.

I hate to be a pessimist, but I think I put too much faith in Nick. I'm utterly disgusted with what they've done to Winx, as it doesn't feel like it can appeal to a teenager anymore. I'm really scared to see what Winx will become here in America now. :(

Kae Lily said...

While I did enjoy it, I felt a little disappointed too.

The part about cleaning the castle seemed out of place to me and I felt they rushed it in the end.

I also wish they'd explained why the Trix were suddenly uninterested in Stella's scepter. It seemed like they just randomly decided Bloom could possess the flame.

Something that confused me a little was towards the end, when Bloom jumped in after Kiko. It's not really important, but I was wondering whether she actually hit the lava or was able to transform just as she made contact with it.

On a more positive note, I loved the theme song, transformations and the new graphics. I like how everything was enhanced to seem more magical or realistic. I also can't wait until August 1st! I'll definitely be tuning in!

Listen people. I agree with annoymous that we still have winx. I mean, it's better then nothing right? Angela, this is mostly to you, and im sorry, but i really dont think that anyone should be complaining about it. Winx club is different from the original version, and that's alright. it would look like they ripped it off from rai.

Anonymous said...

Being fans of the originals, we knew what happened and how things worked - but for a new-comer - it's absolutely horrible and hard to follow. (Believe me, I watched it with my best friend who saw bits of the old stuff, and actually didn't mind it. Yet she hated the new one.)

My problem with Nick messing up Winx is that it won't be the same now. People who haven't seen it, or haven't seen it in ages will most likely not like it because it is extremely childish, and decide to give up on it for good. I would rather Winx still be in Italy (and I end up watching the dubs or learning Italian) than this.

Ripped off from Rai....? It's one show, it should be dubbed the same in each country if it's a hit in it's home town. Think about 4Kids - that's how it got big here, and it was a lot like Rai (since it's the same show...). The fact that Nick made it into something it's not is what bothered me.

No offense - but I needed to rant. I had too high of hopes for a company I didn't trust to begin with.

Also, about the "magic winx" to "magic charmix" thing, thanks. I wasn't sure what they said.

Special just ended here in California, and I must say I love it! They only covered 3 or 4 episodes, but it was still good. On with my review!

The voices. Bloom's was great, better than the other two. Stella's was.. eh, not as bad as 4kids, but the Rai one will always be better. Flora's was amazing, better than the other two, too. Musa was a bit nasal, but I guess that's thanks to Romi's previous roles. Tecna's was good, a bit too emotional at times, seeing as the first season portrays her as very robot-like. Icy's was a bit too high pitched, Stormy's was good, and Darcy's was.. kind of creepy.

The animation was the best thing of all. Season 1's original animation just screamed 2003 (I assume it was all done in 2003, as it premiered in January '04), but this is beautiful. Not too bobblehead-ish, either.

They did a very nice job of smushing the different episode segments together. I was seriously unsure about how that'd go, but it flowed smoothly.

The lines are almost spot-on to Rai's! Obviously they changed some things to fit it all into an hour, but still. I only heard three (to me) lame lines. "Chillax," by Icy. "Nah, it's totally uncool," & "Totally busted, Tecna," & "I just hit something really funky," all by Musa. I hope she doesn't get all the stupid slang again.

All in all, I loved it and can't wait for August. On that topic, though, I'm a little worried about how they're spacing these things. August is over a month away, and they still have two more specials after that. I know they're trying to spread Winx out over a longer period of time, but this time line makes me worry they're going to lose fans when the fans have to wait over a month for each special. Ah well, time will tell. Sorry for my novel. :D

Kae Lily said...

"I hope she doesn't get all the stupid slang again."

If she does, I'm going to jam a pole into my ears.

Anonymous said...

Angela, I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. I understand that you have your own opinion, but they did NOT butcher it! I didn't see how it was childish at all, especially since the lines were more realistic (like without all the stupid valley-girl slang they used in the 4Kids dub). And this statement from you: "and didn't take ANY original lines." Have you even seen the Cinelume dub? Because a lot of the lines they used were EXACTLY the same. And the thing about the word Winx not meaning anything was IN the original. Get your facts straight before you start flaming. I apologize if I have offended you, but I think a true Winx fan wouldn't bash a dub just because it's not what they're used to.

I x3 sparkles said...

Angela - I agree with you. It just wasn't the same. For us who grew up with Winx, this was just...

And I didn't HATE Icy's voice (I STILL don't know her new VA's name, not that it matters now - read on) but it wasn't even comparable to Lisa Ortiz's Icy voice because if you ask me, Lisa Ortiz's Icy voice was PERFECT. The positive notes would be Liz voicing Daphne, Matt voicing Sky, and whoever voicing Riven, they all did great, in my opinion.

This... just wasn't the same. I won't be watching the second special, or any of the specials or episodes at all (therefore meaning it doesn't matter anymore that I don't know the name of Icy's VA, after I wanted to know for so long.) It's just not the same now.

And to think I stayed up later to watch the 11 PM showing cuz I wound up not being able to watch the 8 PM one. Wow. Waste of time.

Actually, no it wasn't. It had to happen for God to get through to me. This was His way of telling me it's really time to let go of Winx Club and finally, once and for all, move on. I'm thankful for that realization. :)

Bye bye, people. :)

Anonymous said...

I thought Icy, Tecna, Bloom, Musa, Sky, and Riven all had spectacular voices, by the way. :)

Anonymous said...

So, sparkles, you're giving up on Winx because it's "not the same" anymore? It can't be the same. They had to get new voices from their own company, they wanted to stick close to the original storyline.

Alright then, your loss. Hope you can at least give the next special a try.

Anonymous said...

Hmm, I kinda have to agree with you, Anonymous (the last Anonymous, too many anonymous's :D )

Ella Anders said...

Okay, I understand where all of you are coming from, and it is okay that we all don't feel the same way about the specials.

I know we should be happy that they are back in the States, but it just feels like that the magic that the Winx h brought, is gone. It also was very rushed and some parts where out of place, and somethings where kind of awkward.

If you where a new viewer watching Winx for the first time, you would be confused. Not a good thing right off that bad.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I understand. I think you put it in a good way, Ella. I just felt like Angela's comment looked liked a hate comment, and I was ticked off.

Ooh, a blog to rant on. :D

am I like the ONLY person upset that Brandon and Sky didn't switch names? I know they're like cramming everything into a really fast summary (which is a mistake) but gah, that was like... a little twist that's totally out the window now. xP

I believe in dubs being accurate. For what Nick tried to do it was... all right. The good sort of canceled out the bad and it's just slightly better than the 4Kids version. I have overly mixed feelings and, like many viewers old and new, I'm just very confused. o_o; It was definitely not the justice the series needed; all I really want is to watch the very first dub, before 4Kids got to it. How it was SUPPOSED to be, even if it's not very good.

I'm hoping it'll get better when they stop mashing episodes together, though. They will stop some season(s) later, right...?

laylaenchantix said...

angela, please let me finish my comment (my mom made me get off my laptop -_-)
it would look like they ripped it off if they copied to many scenes from it, and also, in my opionon (SPELLING FAIL) i think that 4kids is bad for winx (i'm mostly talking about the voices. they were terrible)
and kiko is a bunny, so you can't really expect much from that. oh wow, im talking about the bunny :P
anyway, the voices were a lot better then i expected. when i first heard quinn as bloom, i thought it was a little disapointing, but now i think the voice fits bloom. stella was a little squeaky, but it's fine.
not everything can be the same, and for most of you guys, you've seen it on tv a long time ago. this is my first time seeing it on my tv (and not on youtube!), so im really happy to see the premiere.
and you can definetly count on that im gonna see it on aguest (spelling fail again)!

laylaenchantix said...

and i STILL HAVE NO CARE FOR 4KIDS (no offence to people who like 4kids...) so dont expect me to mention it -_-

Ella Anders said...

PaperSak- I was half glad and half upset about that.

When I first saw the first season, I felt bad for Bloom, (she was my fav for years,) and didn't like Sky for it. I was glad that Bloom wasn't going to have to deal with that on top of everything.

It really was way too rushed :(
However, talking it wasn't a great move. The mistaken ids was a nice little chunk of season, it set up Bloom returning to Earth. And because of that, the Trix got her power and well, you know what happens next.

Anonymous said...

I'm not sure what you mean about the whole "ripped-off" thing, laylaenchantix, but on everything else I agree with you 100%!

Anonymous said...

Well, Ella, if this episode really was all that confusing, then think of how much more confusing it would be if they included the name switch. I was a bit upset at first, but I knew it would've taken them a long time to explain and resolve the situation, and there's no way they could fit that into their specials. (remember, they have to put a whole season in just 2 hours, so anything that's not vital to the overall plot gets cut)

Kae Lily said...

I think we all should just try to respect each other's opinions. Like Ella said, it's okay we all feel differently, but let's try not to attack each other over it. Some of us probably just got our hopes up too high, so of course, we felt crushed when the special didn't live up to our expectations. Whether you loved the special so much you're excitedly awaiting the 2nd one or you hated it so much you're going to give up Winx Club, everyone's opinion deserves the same amount respect. And remember, as much as we all love, like, dislike or hate Winx Club, it's only a show and it's not worth busting an artery over.

If you would like to watch the special again, it's coming on again at 1:00 pm today. I am going to watch it again, but when the 2nd special comes around, I'm not going to be as hopeful.

Ella Anders said...

Anonymous about Kae Lily- I know, and they did have to cut a lot out. Going from 26 about 22 to 23 minutes episodes to two about 45 minute specials is a major cut.

Kae Lily- You are right, and maybe out hopes where too high. After all, none of us really knew what was coming.

Anonymous said...

I think you meant four, not two.

And my hopes were VERY high (always have been) and guess what? I love it! So I don't really think expectation has much to do with it.

Ella Anders said...

Anonymous- Yes there are a total of four, but I was just meaning the season 1s. And it great to hear that you loved it.

Anonymous said...

Oh, I misunderstood, I thought you meant that they were cutting 2 episodes into one special, I didn't know you meant 2 specials. My bad. :P

Ella Anders said...

I okay, I should have been more clear of what I was talking about.

It actually depends how old u r lets say 5-10 might like it. But maybe 13+ might not because we grew up watching the old animation and we're used to it and also because 5-10 are growing up with this new animation. and remember Winx was meant for 5 year olds.

Kae Lily said...

Winx Club was meant for children between the ages of 5 and 12, not merely 5-year-olds.

I wasn't attacking any of your guys personally, so I don't think you need to be offended. I apologize if I did offend you, but those were my thoughts on the subject, and I (to some degree) see where you are coming from. And don't complain about getting ticked at my comment - as I am the one getting attacked for my opinion.

Granted, I have only seen a bit of the Rai-dub - I still don't find the Nick-dub very Winx-ey. (Which includes art-wise. As far as I know, all of the Winx dubs used the same art.) Alos, so much was omitted that it was boring - and I'm sorry if you don't feel the same. I only wish they would re-dub the original series - since in the VAing regards, they were fine. It would give their artists a break, after all.

And I do agree with you guys about Musa's slang. It was rather embarrassing...

Well, so people don't think I don't like anything about this dub, I'll just list what I did like.

I loved the voices of Bloom, Musa, Flora, Faragonda, Vanessa and a few others I can't think of right now. Overall, the voicing and sound-effects were pretty well done.

I liked the transformation sequences, since they weren't as long as the originals - (at least it seemed that way, I could be mistaken.) and very sparkly. ^^

The Specialists were pretty well done - as I think they took the new animation style the best.

Alfea looked really pretty. Like, better than the originals, to be honest.

So, that's what I DID like about it.

Kae Lily said...

Just so no one thinks I was singling them out, my commenting about respecting everyone's opinion was directed at everybody. I just don't want to see an argument happen.

I am also sorry if I offended anyone.

See, Angela, all I wanted was a bit of positivity (is that a word?) from you. :) I think a lot of times a good opinion needs to include both the good parts AND the bad parts, so the fact that you only said the bad parts was probably the part that made me mad.

But it doesn't really matter anymore, since I forgive you anyway (hoping you forgive me?) :)

Ok, I've read all of the comments and made my conclusion: You're ALL idiots. Nick DID butcher it. I mean, they put all the episodes from the first season into 1 hour?? Thats butchering something peopl. The naming things. The crystals for example. They named them Vacuums? I mean that's "Very creative". It's Pathetic. Angela up there Isn't trying to insult anyone. Don't take it personally.

Ok, sure. It's better than nothing. But you don't have to get all upset and insulted like YOU were the one that made the show. I mean If this was YOUR show, Sure, be insulted, start complaining about peoples flames. But it isn't.

You guys seriously need to get a life. Winx Club isn't everything. Except for some of you. But You could change that. Get a job, get a boyfriend, do SOMETHING. (No offence to Ella, at least she did something with her Winx-Club-fan-life, she made a website about it. How many of YOU have YOUR own websites hmmm?

Thats what I thought. Well, anyways. I'm not trying to insult Winx Club itself, I mean: It's a good show. But WAYYYYY overrated by you guys. Like I said: Get a life.

Well, I wasted enough time already, So I'll let you guys get back on with your pitiful lives. I'm gonna go do stuff that's actually worth-while. SIANARA!!

And why didn't they just make a whole new series? Then it would of been worth it. they're just redoing the old ones with different lines and such. I'ts just... Bleh. They could of Made it a bit more realistic too. Sure their knew animation looks I guess.. Cleaner. But Their hovering was retarded. It looked like they were jumping up and down, while staying in the air. Their running was also messed up. They just need to do more improvements, then it would've been better. And if they made more episodes. If they smooshed it all into 3 hours it would've made more sense. Like when they all of a sudden were in trouble and had to clean the castle. Whatever..

P.S. - I'm the same person that posted above, it's just a followup comment.

P.P.S. - Don't go to crazy from my flames. I would rather not be attacked by crazy fan girls. Thanks:)

Alright, you have officially crossed the line. It's fine if you have a different opinion, but that gives you NO right to insult our intelligence. You could've easily said what you just did without calling us idiots and telling us to get a life. If you can't say anything in a freaking civil way, then don't say anything at all. Either way, I'm too tired of fighting to correct the flaws in your comment. It would be pointless anyway.
